MAURICE "Mo" PHILLIPS, Jr.2004 Hall of Fame For over 25 years he has competed in wheelchair basketball both as a player and coach on a national and international level. Over his basketball career he has won three national championships and was named a National Wheelchair Basketball Association All American six times. In 1974, he was named the Rookie of the Year in the NWBA and made the All Conference Team from 1974-1981. Mo has been awarded seven sportsmanship awards throughout his playing career. He was inducted into the National Wheelchair Basketball Association Hall of Fame in 1998. As an assistant coach he has won gold, silver, and bronze medals in the Pam Am Games and was the head coach of the Michigan Thunderbirds in 1998 and the Dallas Mavericks from 1999-2000. Mo just returned from Athens, Greece where he was Head Coach of the U.S. Men's Paralympics Wheelchair Basketball Team. I Through his community work, Mo has been a mentor to many young players over the years particularly those in his home state of Michigan. He helps to promote sports, education, and activities working directly with children with disabilities. He also works closely with physicians and therapists to promote the visibility and participation of wheelchair sports. He is a member of the Michigan Protection Advocacy organization. Mo was nominated for this award by ADHOF alumni, Darlene Quinlan who wrote: "Maurice is a player that many young players look up to or look to his record/history in the NWBA with awe. Mo has shown great respect for this position that he is in and has always tried to be an example for others, both in terms of playing style and personal interactions." Congratulations Mo! |
