MARGUERITE MADDOX
Enshrined October 3, 2002

Marguerite Maddox has never allowed her impairment to stop her in what she has wanted to achieve. Her passion for sports and competitive drive led to her participation in four consecutive Paralympic Games including Holland in 1980, the USA in 1984, South Korea in 1988, and Spain in 1992. She had the honor of carrying the Olympic Torch in the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta.

Her sports involvement includes competing in the very first National Cerebral Palsy Games held at Belle Isle in 1978. Her many accomplishments include competing in the International CP games in Scotland in 1978 winning three gold and one silver medal; in Holland in 1980 medalling three times; in Denmark in 1982 with two medals; and in South Africa in 1985 taking two gold medals in track. Marguerite was selected to be on the 1990 World Championship cycling team in Holland placing third.

She has represented the United States in numerous international competitions for over 25 years once taking part in a 350 mile cycling event from Washington D.C. to Pittsburgh. She continues to find time to remain actively involved with World TEAM (The Exceptional Athlete Matters) Sports. She uses her cycling experience to travel cross-country with a group to encourage young women to believe in themselves and no dream is impossible.

She is very involved in her community volunteering at the Great Lakes Center for Independent Living and assisting the downriver Panthers sports team.

She was awarded the Volunteer Appreciation Award for outstanding contributions to the young adult community of Detroit. Marguerite is a lifelong resident of Detroit.
