Bill Griggs has had the opportunity to display his excellence both on and off the playing field. Over the years he represented the United States in a variety of international wheelchair competitions demonstrating his athletic abilities as a world-class paralympian. His athletic performance has led to his induction into the United States Wheelchair Sports Hall of Fame and Wyandotte Sports Hall of Fame.
While he has enjoyed great success in sports, Bill has also used his energies to become actively involved with disability issues. He has been an active member of the Michigan Commission of the Employment of the Handicapped, Michigan Job Training Council, National Wheelchair Athletic Committee, Michigan Wheelchair Athletic Committee, and Community Task Force for the Disabled. He served as director of Wyandotte's adaptive recreation program from 1972 to 1980.
His accomplishments within his Wyandotte community have resulted in numerous community awards, including Wyandotte Citizen of the Year. Other awards include the Lord Baden-Powell Award from the Boy Scouts of America, Outstanding Government Official Award by the Michigan Rehabilitation Association, John Hussey Award from the Michigan Wheelchair Athletic Committee as well as being elected to the Theodore Roosevelt High School Distinguished Graduate Hall of Fame. |
