CHERYL ANGELELLI
2000 Female Athlete of the Year

During the 1999-2000 competition year, Cheryl Angelelli further established herself as a world-class athlete. She claimed a national title with one gold and four silver medals at the 1999 U.S. National Disability Championships. Ranking 10th in the world and second in the U.S. in the 100-meter breast stroke and the 200-meter individual medley, she earned a spot on the Paralympic swimming team for the 2000 Games in Sidney, Australia. All of this success came on the heels of an impressive showing at the 1998 International Paralympic World Championships for Swimmers with Disabilities where she finished 10th and 11th in her swim events. Currently the marketing and public relations manager for the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, Angelelli is a former Ms. Wheelchair Michigan (1991-92), a Southeastern Michigan Spinal Cord Injury Model System Advisory Council member, and a member of the State Independent Living Council. Stadiums and concert halls seek her expertise on accessibility issues and operations for their patrons with disabilities, and she co-founded an annual award that highlights the accomplishments of disabled Michiganians.
